Introduction

 

The aim of this  wiki page is to make a comparison between College life at Dickinson and University life in Padova.  We will focus on four topics which can be meaningful to mark differences and similarities between American and Italian students and their student life. The topics we are going to deal with are: partying, accomodation,extra-curricular activities and food. At the end of the page we will make a table containing a typical schedule of a Padova student life and one of a Dickinson student life.
Since the topic is quite actual and does not call for precise resources, we rely mainly on each other as sources of information. Actually, we used Skype to exchange information; our partner is Spanish and she's in Dickinson for one year as an Overseas Student Assistant (OSA) and she described us life at Dickinson College from a European point of view.
 

 

 

Partying

 

At Dickinson

 

Parties can be the best thing about College, as well as about University. It doesn’t matter which College or University you are attending or in which part of the world you are pursuing your higher education: everywhere students want to have fun. There are, however, meaningful differences in the ways students party, basically depending on how Universities and Colleges are differently structured. Considering American students and Italian students, for instance, the first group primarily live in the campus and all their scholastic and extra-scholastic activities take place within the college and the campus: as a consequence even parties will take place in the campus. After all, this comes quite naturally if we consider that in the United States there are very strict drinking age limits, so it would be impossible for students who are not yet 21 to get alcoholic drinks in a bar. So, it is the College itself which organizes parties or the clubs or specific associations, even students themselves can organize parties individually in their dormitories. When there is a party somewhere in the campus rumours start spreading among the students, but it seems that the students mainly find out  about parties thanks to Facebook, a social software where users can upload their personal profiles and even post messages to their friends: it really seems that young people in America are getting crazy over it and spend hours in front of the computer.  

Students in Dickinson usually organize parties on the weekends and they do not need a reason to have a party: if they feel in the mood and have time, they party. For them, partying means to socialize, to meet a lot of people and to drink. American students definitely love beer and during parties they often play beer-pong , that is a table of ping pong where they play different games and when somebody loses they have to drink. As a Spanish girl, our partner pointed out that among the American students there is a tendency to drink a lot, especially just to get drunk; she also realized that they don’t like dancing very much, they sometimes dance but not always: this is very different if compared to Spain or Italy where a party is really successful when every student by the end of the party just unleashes on the dance floor.  

When talking about parties is quite impossible to ignore fraternities and sororities. Outside the US these college organisations are quite rare and in Italy they doesn’t exist at all. Discussing the issue with our partner it emerged  that the overall impression of Italian students on fraternities has been distorted by the great amount of movies and TV-movies which are broadcasted in Europe and that succeeded in conveying the idea that being part of such membership is the best way to enjoy College and that may help you gaining respect and getting privileges. Our partner pointed out that to have real fun while studying at college, it is not necessary to join one of these fraternities and sororities, which are actually not appreciated by international students: they are perceived as “communities within a community” and students decide to join them otherwise they wouldn’t have good friends in the campus.  In Dickinson there are more or less ten fraternities and according to the tradition their names are made up by Greek letters and often the members live together in a common house or in the dorms.  The members take part to their own specific activities and organize their own parties, which are sometimes opened to the other college students as well. Anyway these parties don’t  seem to be so spectacular, amazing and funny as they appear to be in movies: the real profile and the real world of the fraternities are quite different.

 Finally, College students and University students have a lot of fun but we do have very different ideas regarding what partying really means. There are different cultural reasons at the basis of these differences in partying, but at first sight this is particularly due to the fact that the reality of College students seems to primarily restricted to that of the campus, while University students have the opportunities of experiencing partying in several and various ways, taking advantage of living in a quite big city such Padova.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

A Padova

 

Agli italiani piace fare festa, come a tutti i giovani in generale. Gli studenti che frequentano l’Università degli studi di Padova escono il fine settimana ma il mercoledi è la serata studentesca per eccellenza. A volte prima di uscire si trovano negli appartamenti dove abitano e bevono un pò insieme ma dopo escono e vanno in piazza.  Nel centro di Padova si può bere fino a mezzanotte, ora in cui termina il cosiddetto happy hour, ovvero si beve un drink ad un prezzo più economico. Una bibita che gli italiani bevono molto spaesso, un aperitivo tipico del Nord Italia, si chiama Spriz: questoècomposto per 1/3 da vino bianco, 1/3 Aperol Soda o Campari e per 1/3 acqua frizzante. Spesso gli studenti bevono anche vino, in particolare il Prosecco, un vino bianco, oppure il Brachetto, un vino rosso. Molti italiani bevono anche della birra, ma non è una delle bevande preferite, o almeno non durante l’aperitivo. Il mercoledì l'happy hour può cominciare anche alle 18.30-19.00 e tutti gli studenti che escono dall'università a quell'ora si incontrano direttamente in piazza oppure nei piccoli bar del centro. Come ho già detto, l'aperitivo può durare anche fino a mezzanotte o all'una, insomma gli studenti tornano a casa quando i bar non servono più da bere perché sono costretti a chiudere.

 

Alcuni dopo aver trascorso del tempo “agli spritz”, vanno in discoteca. Le discoteche sono però un pò distanti dal centro e gli studenti usano spesso la bicicletta per raggiungerle; la bicicletta é il mezzo più economico e di conseguenza il più usato da tutti gli studenti a Padova. Comunque se le discoteche non piacciono, ci sono moltissime altre cose da fare a Padova: in centro ci sono molti cinema e gli studenti hanno delle riduzioni significative sui biglietti. C'è anche la possibilità di andare a teatro e di recitare. Gli studenti stessi partecipano attivamente a laboratori teatrali e mettono poi in scena vari spettacoli. Altrimenti si può sempre passeggiare per la città, stendersi sull'erba a Prato della Valle e passare la serata con gli amici a cantare e chiacchierare. Questo è il passatempo preferito dagli studenti padovani nel periodo estivo. Sia di giorno che di notte, Prato della Valle è pieno dei pattinatori, corridori, studenti, turisti. È un ottimo posto per rilassarsi ma è anche un luogo per importanti eventi sportivi e concerti, inoltre di Sabato c’è un mercato molto interessante e la terza domenica di ogni mese c’è un mercato con gli oggetti antichi.

Le occasioni per festeggiare e stare insieme non si limitano all’happy hour: i compleanni, per esempio,  sono spesso ottime occasioni per festeggiare. Il festeggiato di solito organizza una cena nel suo appartamento e poi ogni invitato porta qualcosa con sé. Organizzare feste a casa degli studenti può risultare molto divertente oltre che economico anche se spesso gli studenti abitano in condomini e non possono fare troppo rumore. Inoltre, anche se in Italia le confraternite non esistono, alcune facoltà, per esempio quella di Medicina, organizza enormi feste a cui partecipano anche gli altri studenti. Anche la facoltà di Agraria è rinomata per le sue feste. Ci sono degli studenti che organizzano concerti e offrono da bere e da mangiare per tutta la notte. Normalmente non si paga quasi nulla e ci si diverte molto.

Anche se Padova è oramai un città multiculturale in cui di certo non mancano gli studenti stranieri, ovvero i cosiddetti “studenti erasmus”, sembra che solitamente questi tendano a frequentare gli altri erasmus, così come gli altri studenti che abitano a Padova tendono a uscire con gli altri studenti fuori sede. Anche i padovani tendono a stare sempre insieme con i padovani e frequentare posti ben precisi, o quartieri della città che gli altri gruppi non frequentano.

Accomodation

 

At Dickinson

 

Students, at Dickinson,  live normally in a dorm where they are supposed to share a room with a roomate. The traditional college dormitories have long corridors, double rooms and shared bathrooms.  Freshmen cannot choose a roomate by themselves, rather the college put them randomly in the different do.
The case is different with students who do not come to Dickinson to complete their college years: those are students like, for example, Rocio, a Spanish girl who received a scholarship to spend one year at Dickinson college. Her situation is different compared to that of the other students because, apart from being a student she is also working as a teacher assistant for the Spanish department. Therefore, she has a room in a dorm called Romance language house and she has not been obliged to share it with another person. In fact, she is living in a single room.
Students, at Dickinson, may also live off-campus: these are, in particular, senior students  who have a chance to gain more independence with each passing year so they can be assigned to independent residence halls, where there is less supervision by the college staff.; their apartments are situated outside the campus, not far from it, at all. 

The Office of Residential Life is the institution in charge with students’ accomodation at the Dickinson college. The office has a separate section on the Dickinson website: here they describe their work and give all the information students need to know for their stay in the college. http://www.dickinson.edu/departments/reslife/selection.html.

The office is there to explain students how are they going to be assigned a room and a roommate, and the date and the place where all this is going to happen.   

Since, students cannot chose their roommate by themselves, the role of the office of residential life is also that of encouraging a good relationship between all the students at the college. They have a Resident Adviser who is there to help them when they have particular problems regarding their cohabitation: he becomes a kind of mediator between roommates. In order to avoid conflicts which may arise between roommates they can obtain a roommate agreement which is a document where students are supposed to write about their living style, so that they can learn each other’s habits and try to respect them.  

 

 

 

 

 

A Padova

 

 

Gli studenti italiani abitano in appartamenti, sparsi per la città e condividono l'abitazone con altri amici.  Di solito vanno ad abitare in tre o quattro in un appartamento perchè in qusto modo il costo dell'affitto diveta più sostenibile. Si cerca sempre di trovare un appartamento più in centro possibile visto che la maggior parte degli studenti si spostano a piedi o in bicicletta. Lo studente che arriva a Padova per studiare trova appartamento grazie agli annunci appesi nelle varie facoltà oppure recandosi in qualche agenzia immobiliare.

Gli studenti che arrivano invece da altri paesi, ma anche gli stessi italiani che arrivano dal Meridione per studiare a Padova, incontrano spesso difficoltà nel trovare un appartamento. Ciò é dovuto forse al fatto che non tutti sono disposti ad affitttare la propria casa a stranieri, un pò causa la mentalità forse ancora chiusa.

Ci sono poi molti ragazzi che studiano a  Padova ma che preferiscono fare i pendolari, ovvero piuttosto che prendersi un appartamento in affitto fanno su e giù in treno o in autobus per raggiungere la città. Solitamente sono studenti che abitano nelle vicinanze di Padova, magari nei paesini circostanti, e  che, facendo così, continuano a vivere in casa con i genitori.

Il prezzo normale di un appartamento per uno studente é di circa 200 euro.

La maggior parte degli studenti che vengono a Padova per studiare e che vivono nel Veneto ritorna a casa per il weekend. Il venerdì, infatti, le aule oltre ad essere popolate da studenti  sono anche piene di valige.

Extra-curricular activities

 

At Dickinson

 

In the United States, students organize a lot of extra - curricular activities and they form clubs and groups. Usually, students organize different clubs, based on the language they study ( so there is a Spanish club, a Russian club etc.), or on the kind of event they like most ( cultural events, dance and theatrical events etc). In Dickinson there are over 150 clubs and activities, including music and drama groups, student publications, fraternities and sororities, and religious, political, special-interest, and community services organizations. These different groups are: Community Services Groups, Academic Honorary Societies, Non-Academic Honorary Societies, Language Interest,   Performing Arts, Special Interest, Religious Life and Club Sports. Each group has different purposes: for example, The Community Service Group is about service to the community and personal growth, social actions, helping unprivileged people etc. or Academic Honorary Societies (which are national organization addressed to different kind of students) has the general aim of education and personal growth of students. Other clubs are about various interests ( geology, politics and economics, history, arts and so on); there are also groups on performing arts, such as the Dance Theatre Group, a student organization that prepares concerts including a variety of dance styles and forms (solos, small group, and large group pieces).

 There are groups focused on media and students who edit the Dickinson Magazine. It is published in January, April, July and October and every edition has its own topic, for example the latest edition is on China, seen from different points of view ( politics, development perspectives, growth etc.).
Sport is also really important in American students’ life: they have karate, ice hockey, ski and snowboarding sport  clubs.
Also religious life is not left out. There is the Religious Life Council, that is a monthly meeting of student religious organizations and the Office of Religious Life and Community Services that together coordinate, support, and communicate various religious life programs. Students form different groups, such as meditation classes, Bible studies, interfaith conversation.
In their free time students in Dickinson are also supported by the Student Activities Office, that offers many services to help them on campus. Some of the services are:
 
·        Recreational Shuttles: some days of the week, this service provides transportation to various points in Carlisle and surrounding areas;
·        Publicity Supplies: the Student Activities Office provides students the help they require to advertise the events they organize ( parties, concerts etc.);
·        Lost and Found office;
·        Student Handbook: it includes all the information students need to live at Dickinson Universtiy (for instance, Residential Life policies, an academic calendar, a short history of the college and how to publicize an event).

A Padova

 

Diversamente da quanto avviene negli Stati Uniti, in Italia gli studenti non sono organizzati in gruppi o club e ognuno gestisce il proprio tempo libero nella maniera che preferisce. La città di Padova comunque offre molte opportunità di svago: gli studenti - e non solo - si possono riunire nei bar, nei diversi locali che animano la città e soprattutto il suo centro, oppure nelle piazze ( le principali del centro storico sono tre: Piazza delle Erbe, Piazza dei Signori e Piazza della Frutta), dove nel periodo estivo vengono allestiti tavolini e ci si può sedere comodamente per fare una chiacchierata o per bere qualcosa in compagnia, magari uno spritz, l'aperitivo tipico padovano. Altra meta molto gettonata, soprattutto nel periodo estivo, è il Prato della Valle. Questa è una delle piazze più grandi d'Europa ed è molto frequenatata dagli studenti perchè è facilmente raggiungibile in bicicletta o a piedi e ci sono panchine e spazi verdi in cui riposarsi. leggere o prendere il sole. 

Per chi invece desidera praticare sport, l'Università mette a disposizione degli studenti due impianti  sportivi: la sede del CUS ( acronimo che sta per Centro Universitario Sportivo. Oltre a essere un'associazione sportiva, il CUS è anche un ente di promozione che ha la finalità di avvicinare gli studenti al mondo dello sport) in via Giordano Bruno, vicino al Prato della Valle, e la struttura in via Jacopo Corrado, a poca distanza dagli istituti scientifici. Vengono organizzati non solo corsi di fitness, di pattinaggio, di calcetto e tennis, ma anche corsi di golf e di ballo latino americano. Il Centro ha poi otto sezioni agonistiche: atletica leggera, rugby, hockey su prato, scherma, lotta greco - romana, judo, sci di fondo e calcio ( anche se le principali sono le prime tre attività). Per gli studenti e i dipendenti universitari vengono organizzati i Ludi del Bo, tornei in cui viene offerta la possibilità di partecipare nel corso dell'anno alle discipline più svariate, dalla pallavolo alla pallacanestro,dal ping pong al tennis, agli scacchi o al golf. Agli studenti dell'ateneo il CUS offre anche spazi "no pay" e riduzioni sugli abbonamenti in altri centri sportivi convenzionati.

Per essere informati sulle altre opportunità di svago che Padova offre agli studenti e più in generale ai giovani, è molto utile dare uno sguardo alle pagine web  http://www.padovanet.it/. Questo è un portale gestito dal Comune di Padova che segnala eventi, novità dal Comune, rassegne e mostre. Nello stesso sito, accedendo al link di Progetto Giovani ( un servizio rivolto ai giovani organizzato dall'Assessorato alle Politiche Giovanili del Comune di Padova) si possono avere informazioni su eventi, concerti, offerte lavorative e opportunità di formazione. Tra queste vi sono ad esempio i servizi di Tandem Learning con studenti stranieri e la partecipazione a soggiorni all'estero focalizzati su diversi temi: l'ambiente, il teatro, l'intercultura.

Students in Dickinson have an identity card they use to eat in the cafeteria, to print or buy at the Dickinson store. The identity card contains some points; for example, they have ten points a day to eat. Moreover, they can choose among four meal plans. The Traditional Plan offers three meals a day, from Monday to Saturday and brunch and dinner on Sundays. The Traditional Plan is nontransferable and limited to one use per meal. Students must not bring guests using this plan. Dickinson College recommends that first semester students choose the Traditional Plan until study and eating habits are established.The Flexboard I or "Points" Plan assigns a point value to every meal, a total of 700 per semester. When the card is used at any dining location the appropriate amount of points are deducted: two for breakfast, three for lunch and five for dinner. This plan has unlimited use for the duration of the points total and a Declining Balance Account amount of $125 attached. The Flexboard II or "Points" Plan assigns a point value to every meal, a total of 650 per semester. When the card is used at any dining location the appropriate amount of points are deducted. For example, two points for breakfast, three for lunch and five for dinner. This plan has unlimited use for the duration of the points total and a Declining Balance Account amount of $150 attached.The Apartment Housing Flex Meal Plan is available only to students who live off campus or in college-owned apartments. In Dickinson students  have the possibility to eat in three different places, which are the Union Station Hours, the Quarry and the Underground. Union Station is open throughout the day and evening to accommodate busy students, faculty and staff. There, they can eat great snacks, hot and cold sandwiches; moreover, daily specials and quick service are available at Dickinson's snack bar.The Quarry is a great place to gather and enjoy an espresso and other specialties such as beverages, sandwiches made to order, pizza, specialty pretzels and the best milkshake in town.The Underground features organically grown fair-trade coffees and teas. Bagels, muffins, cold drinks, prepackaged entrées and salads are also available. This place can be a great alternative to other dining areas for a quick snack or when you prefer a more relaxed setting.

 

They can cook by themselves in the kitchen of the dormitories but they prefer to go to the cafeteria. The fact is that they do not have enough time to cook. What is more, everyday they can have a look of the menu on the Dickinson website. Here they can also see how much is the food and beverage. The menu is very rich and they can choose among a lot of plates, such as Cheeseburgers & Hamburgers,Tomato & Bell Pepper,Shoe String Fried Potatoes and Peas & Mushrooms. Whatever the truth, our peer said that in Dickinson food is typically American, so it is very difficult to have a healthy diet. As consequence, people normally gain some weight.

 

 

 

A Padova

 

 

Nell'università di Padova l'ESU, ovvero l'azienda regionale per il diritto allo studio, gestisce direttamente 4 ristoranti universitari ed è convenzionata con altre strutture  come ad esempio enti, società, cooperative o privati per dare la possibilità agli utenti di usufruire del pasto, alle medesime condizioni offerte dall'ESU, anche in altre zone della città.

Possono accedere alle mense universitarie gli iscritti dell'Università di Padova a:

 

  • corsi di laurea triennale,
  • specialistica e specialistica a ciclo unico;
  • scuole di specializzazione;dottorati di ricerca;

 

presentando il badge magnetico rilasciato dalla segreteria competente.Per la prima categoria di utenti il costo del servizio ristorazione è differenziato in base alle condizioni economico-patrimoniali certificate nell'Attestazione ISEE presentata e dei requisiti di merito scolastico.I criteri relativi sia alla condizione di reddito che di merito sono contenuti in dettaglio nelle Norme di Accesso alle Mense.

Possono inoltre usufruire del servizio di ristorazione, previa richiesta all'Esu, che rilascerà un proprio badge di accesso: 

 

  • studenti iscritti ai corsi superiori, triennali e biennali dei Conservatori Musicali;
  • studenti iscritti ai Corsi di Diploma delle Scuole Superiori per Mediatori Linguistici;
  • studenti inseriti nei programmi di mobilità dell'Unione Europea e scambi internazionali;
  • iscritti ad altre Università italiane o straniere che frequentano l'Università di Padova per motivi di studio (debitamente documentati);
  • dottorati di ricerca di Sedi consorziate con l'Università di Padova;beneficiari di borsa di studio post Laurea;
  • titolari di assegno per attività di ricerca;
  • iscritti a: corsi singoli, corsi di perfezionamento e master;
  • tirocinanti.

 

Differentemente dal sito di Dickinson, nell'università di Padova, per avere informazioni relative a residenze, ristorazione, borse di studio, biblioteche,tempo libero ecc. si utilizza il sito dell'ESU; quindi non  il sito ufficiale dell'università. Questo sottolinea il fatto che l'università di Padova è organizzata attraverso un sistema statale;infatti, per quanto riguarda i servizi appena citati, si fa riferimento all' Azienda Regionale per il Diritto allo Studio (l'ESU appunto).  Inoltre, non essendo l'università di Padova organizzata come un campus americano, presenta strutture di ristorazione posizionate in varie parti della città. Bisogna considerare comunque, che le mense si trovano spesso vicino ai poli delle varie facoltà; ad esempio, la mensa "Nord Piovego" si trova vicino ai poli di ingegneria e la "Marzolo" vicino alla facoltà di farmacia.

Nel sito dell'ESU sono contenuti inoltre gli orari di apertura delle mense con le relative tariffe, che sono di tre tipologie e variano di prezzo in base al tipo di utente.

 

Come gli studenti di Dickinson, gli studenti dell'Università di Padova hanno a disposizione una tessera, che gli permette di usufruire dei punti di ristorazione. Differentemente dal campus americano però, gli  studenti italiani  non possono utilizzare questa tessera per fare fotocopie  o stampare; infatti,  a Padova gli studenti di ogni facoltà hanno una propria tessera per fare  fotocopie. Inoltre, possono accedere tramite nome utente e password solo nei laboratori informatici della propria facoltà.

• gli studenti a Dickinson hanno differenti orari perchè loro fanno i loro orari, ma la prima lezione comincia alle 8:30

• le lezioni sono di 50 minuti, 75 minuti o anche 2 o 3 ore, dipende.

Pranzo:

Si può mangiare da 11:30 fino alle 13.30

 

Pomeriggio:

• Le lezioni cominciamo alle 1:30 

• Quando gli studenti finiscono le lezione, mangiano (17:00-20:00) e loro possono anche fare altre attività: sport, ballare, riunione con il club...

 

 

Sera:

• Gli studenti mangiano normalmente nella tavola calda dell'università.

• Gli studenti chiacchierano, vedono la TV... o fanno i loro compiti.

• Qualsiasi giorno è buono per fare una festa.

 

 

 

Conclusion

La vita a Padova e a Dickinson è molto differente. In generale, potremmo dire che c'è una differenza grandissima perchè parliamo dell'America e dell'Italia. La vita studentesca è per questo molto diversa nei differenti paesi. Uno studente a Padova abita normalmente in un appartemento con altri studenti e va a lezione, e quando termina, esce con altri studenti o ritorna a casa.  Uno studente a Dickinson rimane sempre nel campus perchè trova tutto al suo interno e non ha bisogno di trovare altri sveghi al di fuori di esso. Tutto è molto organizzato e sebbene gli studenti abbiano delle responasabilità, penso che il college fornisca tutto e in generale è molto facile fare quello che ti piace. Comunque, mi sembra che in Italia, come nel mio paese d'origine, la Spagna, lo studente ha l'opportunità di cercare quello che gli piace.  È molto interessante scoprire tutte le differenze che separano due paesi perchè si impara moltissimo ed è un' esperienza bellissima.

 

After having analysed the four main topics, we can say that there are a lot of differences in the way Italians and Americans carry on their student life. The whole university /college system is organized differently in the two countries. The major difference is given by the fact that most of the students at Dickinson live within a campus where they spend  almost all the day. Here they participate in various activities, practice sports, join clubs and organize parties. On the other hand, most of the students in Padua, live in different apartments situated all around the town so that they do not share a common place to sleep and spend their spare time. As a consequence, the way the students spend their routine differs from one country to another. Whilst in Padova lessons last at about 6 p.m. and students need time to return home and often they have to go to the supermaket in order to buy something for the dinner, at Dickinson students finish lessons earlier and then they can spend the rest of the afternoon practicing sports or any other activities, or doing their homework. Moreover, Dickinson students are used to eat within the campus, while most of the Italian students at the University of Padua eat at home with their roomates.

 

An interesting point which comes out from the exchange regards the way students move during the day. Whilst in Padua students are used to do kilometres with their bike or by foot, at Dickinson students seem to be a bit "lazy" because they have all at their disposal and everything is close. On the contrary, in Padua, students must often move from one place to another just to attend  different lessons.

Moreover, at Dickinson students live without their parents over their whole period of study, while in Padua the majority of students return to their parent's  house every weekend.
