Via Anelli has become the ghetto of Padua where illegal immigrants have been living and “working” for at least fifteen years. The buildings they are dwelling in were thought to be for students. Nowadays there are often quarrels, noise, shrieks… and citizens are very scared of. Moreover, in August there had been terrible riots between gangs of illegal immigrants and a corpse of a drug addict was found. To stop those episodes a temporary wall of steel was built but paradoxically violence and drope peddling increased.

Police are on patrol 24 hours a day and at the gates they check all the people. The main problem is that Padua should not set a precedent for ghetto-quarters in Italy.

sono proprio contenta della possibilità che ci è stata offerta da questo corso per scambiare opinioni su due mondi così diversi, almeno all'apparenza, come i nostri.

Riguardando le nostre associazioni di parole e confrontandole sono emerse delle cose a mio giudizio interessanti. Innanzitutto la prolissità di noi italiani nell’esprimere concetti e idee; mentre le vostre risposte sono state più sintetiche e dirette. Credo che ciò sia dovuto da un lato, al numero maggiore di parole offerto dalla nostra lingua e dall’altro, alla generale tendenza di noi italiani di usare un gran numero di parole per concetti semplici, che potrebbero essere espressi in modo decisamente più diretto! Molte volte tendiamo a comportarci così per non ferire la persona che abbiamo di fronte, ma più in generale per abitudine, dato che è un tratto distintivo della nostra cultura (come avrai già avuto modo di constatare :-)!!!).

Un aspetto che mi incuriosisce riguarda la vita universitaria. Qui in Italia continuiamo a vivere a casa quando frequentiamo l’università della nostra città o di una città distante, ma facilmente raggiungibile con i mezzi pubblici, mentre voi alloggiate nel campus, pur avendo la famiglia vicino a voi. Cosa ne pensi? Io appartengo a quella parte di studenti pendolari che quotidianamente raggiunge Padova in autobus e trovo che sia abbastanza faticoso perché perdo due ore della mia giornata senza riuscire a concludere nulla, continuando ad essere soggetta alle regole dei miei genitori. Vorrei essere più indipendente per non continuare a dipendere interamente da loro, ma ciò al momento non è possibile perché non ho i mezzi per mantenermi. È per questo che sto cercando di finire abbastanza velocemente i miei studi. L’anno scorso ho avuto modo di vivere da sola e devo ammettere che è stato uno dei periodi più belli della mia vita! Voi inoltre sembrate molto più coinvolti nella vita universitaria per quanto riguarda i lavori, le collaborazioni, il giornale…ma sopratutto più rilassati! Qui invece regna un’atmosfera diversa: c’è competizione, l’ossessione degli esami e poca integrazione tra noi studenti. Sono impressioni mie, non voglio generalizzare, ma è la sensazione che ho avuto in questi anni.

Non voglio continuare ad annoiarti con questo mio papiro sulle differenze culturali che mi hanno colpito o che vorrei approfondire, però vorrei poter leggere le tue opinioni in merito!

Tra l’altro domani è Halloween: cosa farai di bello??? Si tratta di una festa introdotta in Italia da molti anni ormai e molte saranno le feste. Nella maggior parte dei casi sarà richiesto il travestimento, ma ad alcune si può andare “smascherati” e penso sarà il mio caso!

First of all I’d like to apologize to both of you if it took me a while to respond, this past week has been a little hectic because I’ve had a lot of homework and a few tests. Right now I am actually working on “Il sabato del villaggio” by Leopardi. We are also reading the first chapter of “I promessi sposi” and later in the week we are reading “La giara” by Pirandello. Have you studied these? If so, what are your thoughts on them?

Mardi Gras is very much like some of the celebrations I’ve been to in Europe around Carnevale (Venezia, Nizza, Mentone). New Orleans is probably the most European city that we have in the US and they are maintaining a strong French cultural background. The week of Mardi Gras there are many different groups in New Orleans (called crews) that organize different parades all across the city and in the neighboring parishes. New Orleans has parishes like the Italian "quartieri" or "zone" or "province". All the parades have specific designs representing old traditions of Louisiana history or sometimes like in Europe, have funny representations of politicians. Mardi Gras is a lot of fun, you should definitely make a trip to New Orleans during that time if you are ever in the States! As far as how the city has changed since the storm… It’s getting better but the recovery is slow. The area around campus is getting close to normal but many other areas in New Orleans are inhabitable and will be for a long time.

Thank you for your nice and very interesting note. Let me try to address some of your points and maybe discuss a few others at the same time. You are right that we live in quite "diversi" worlds! I spent 13 years in Monte-Carlo and the rest between New York, Miami and NOLA (other way we call New Orleans, Louisiana) and I still do not know how to combine them but I have enjoyed living in each of those cities. I laughed at your comments regarding how "lengthy" Italians are and how brief Americans are. You are right: it is a different approach, a different lifestyle and a different...vocabulary. I am thinking about the classical studies that I had in the French systems versus what I found during the last two years of high school in Miami. US schools do not offer the same literary and art curriculum you are used to and I did miss that at times.

I understand why you enjoyed living alone for a while. It is a little scary at the beginning but I discovered it is also a way to grow up faster. I guess there is again the sense of "urgency" in the US lifestyle. One thing to consider is the fact that not all the states in the US would have enough colleges to accommodate their students and the fact that universities do not offer certain programs forces the students to start moving across the country. This also continues when people are looking for jobs: they call it "mobility" and there are few people that after the age of 22/23 live in the same state as their parents. If you have any other questions or comments about cultural differences, I’d be happy to discuss them further.

Halloween was quiet for me this year, I had a lot of work to do so I just went over to a friends house, watched a few movies and did some more work. Halloween is pretty big down here so most of my friends went downtown all dressed up and had a lot of fun, I have to say I was a little jealous that I had to stay in that night. What did you do for Halloween?

Anyways do not worry about writing a lot... I enjoy reading your comments.

Grazie per aver risposto in modo così soddisfacente alle mie domande! Ne ho molte altre... Come sai, noi siamo al nostro secondo anno di laurea specialistica e chi prima e chi dopo, entro il prossimo anno finiremo il nostro percorso di studi. A me piacerebbe moltissimo poter trovare un lavoro che mi dia la possibilità di viaggiare, di conoscere posti nuovi, ma sopratutto di sfruttare le lingue che tanto in questi anni ho studiato e che non ho ancora avuto la possibilità di usare al massimo. Per questi motivi, e naturalmente altri, sto iniziando a vagliare varie possibilità all'estero... stage, corsi post-laurea... Mi piacerebbe molto venire negli States, ma credo sia abbastanza difficile accedervi... Tu sai per caso come funzionano le cose?

In questi giorni proverò a rivolgermi all'ufficio dell'università... spero possano darmi delle informazioni utili!

Il tuo papà è italiano: a casa che lingue parli? solo l'inglese?

Tornando velocemente alla tua risposta... per Halloween non ho fatto nulla alla fine perchè sono stata poco bene. Ho invidiato un po' le mie amiche che mi hanno raccontato delle loro feste, dei loro costumi, delle persone incontrate... mi rifarò l'anno prossimo:-)!

Hey Alexandra,

My father is indeed Italian, he was born in Cremona and went to school in Milan. After studying and working in Italy, he moved to the States to work for a company and that’s when he met my mother. At home, I speak Italian with him and English with my mom. It gets a little confusing at times because at dinner I’ll speak in Italian if my dad is around but any other time I'll speak English.

As far as coming to the States, I asked my dad and here are a few things he told me about: Getting a student visa from the American Embassy in Italy should not be extremely difficult, Italy being one of the countries that has a slightly "easier" process for temporary immigration in the US. As far as resources, my dad said something about there being an organization called USIS (United States Information Service) in Milan that used to provide some useful information to Italian students/citizens planning to spend some time in the States to study or work.

As far as working I do not want to sound negative but my dad said it has become very difficult to come here and find a job like a lot of people did in the past. Visa requirement are very strict and not always result in acceptance. What I learned from some friends and my dad is that the easiest way is to find an Italian Company willing to sponsor you for the visa (as long as they have a branch in the US) or be invited by a US company.

Another possibility could be for you to apply for a teaching position for Italian at some high schools or junior high for summer classes. Many cities (New York, Chicago,..) have offered summer positions to teach foreign languages at schools in the past.

Anyways, hope that helps even a little. I really wasn’t sure how coming to the States as an Italian citizen worked, so I got most of that information from my father who came to the States a long time ago.

Ciao Mariana!

Come immaginavo l’iter burocratico è abbastanza complesso e per di più è molto difficile riuscire ad accedere ai programmi… comunque non molloJ!Se non saranno gli States proverò altrove! All’ufficio dell’università hanno saputo rispondere solo in parte alle mie domande, consigliandomi di rivolgermi direttamente agli enti. Vedremo!

Ritornando alla tue domande di letteratura… Leopardi e Manzoni appartengono ai classici della nostra letteratura e quindi sono opere che dovrebbero essere conosciute, però dovendole leggere per scopi scolastici non vengono mai apprezzate appieno! Del poeta di Recanati ho apprezzato “L’Infinito”, “A Silvia” e un testo sulla felicità che però non ricordo a quale raccolta appartenere… La felicità e la speranza sono così grandi fino a quando non vengono disilluse dalla realizzazione di del fatto che tanto si desiderava… è vero se ci pensi … desideri tanto una cosa, ma poi quando si realizza rimani delusa perché non è come te la immaginavi. Anche “Il sabato del villaggio” ha fatto parte dei testi affrontati; mi ricordo di questa donzella e del fatto che il sabato è il giorno più bello della settimana… può essere, o mi confondo?!?!?! “La giara” di Pirandello invece non l’ho mai letta… Di lui mi sono piaciuti “Sei personaggi in cerca d’autore” e “Uno nessuno centomila”. Ti dicono qualcosa? Ricordo di aver incontrato difficoltà nella lettura del Manzoni (di cui a scuola abbiamo letto solo qualche capitolo) e di averlo trovato noioso…

Attualmente sto cercando di coltivare letture di mio interesse e non di autori che mi vengono imposti. Per esempio, sto leggendo Beckett e tra non molto (il 17/11) sarò a teatro per vedere “Endgame”. Non vedo l’ora!!!

Dovremmo pensare ad un nome per il nostro gruppo… Hai qualche suggerimento? Io pensavo a “travellers” visto che i viaggi ci accomunano, per un motivo o per un altro!

Altre due domandine veloci per un lavoro che dobbiamo fare per la settimana prossima… la tradizione del fast-food è proprio così come la vediamo nei film?!?!?! Sai cos’è Via Anelli qui a Padova?

come va? Scusa se non mi sono più fatta viva ma in questi giorni ho dovuto lavorare e il mio computer a casa non va molto bene e non potendo andare a Padova...Tra un mesetto qui inizieremo gli esami di fine semestre! L'unica cosa positiva è che così potrò restare a casa a studiare e non dovrò andare in giro con il freddo!In questi giorni sembra già di essere in inverno!Li da voi com'è il clima?Dovrebbe fare sicuramente più caldo che da noi! Il prossimo semestre comincerà intorno a marzo perciò dovrebbe essere un po' più caldo! Certo che vi fanno studiare cose molto impegnative per letteratura! io di Leopardi ho dei bellissimi ricordi, e specialmente del "Sabato del Villaggio" perchè mi sono sempre riconosciuta molto in questo senso di attesa della festa che poi se ne va così velocemente. A volte mi dispiace quasi che arrivi il fine settimana perchè so che passerà in fretta e sarà di nuovo lunedì!Tu cosa fai di solito nel fine settimana? Io in genere esco con il mio ragazzo o con i miei amici e spesso andiamo a ballare in locali dove fanno musica latino americana. Anche Pirandello non è male, anche se l'unica opera che mi ricordo è "Il fu Mattia Pascal" che ho portato agli esami di maturità alla fine della scuola superiore. Ho letto anche "I Promessi Sposi" di Manzoni ma non me li ricordo molto bene! Sono d'accordo con Alexandra sul nome del gruppo perché anch'io sono decisamente un'amante dei viaggi! Mercoledì prossimo partirò con mia mamma e mia cugina e staremo due settimane a Guadalupe!Penso che sarà una bella esperienza!Spero di riuscire a trovare un Internet Point quando sarò la in modo da poter restare in contatto con voi! Thank you so much for all your comments on the literature questions I had asked. I actually did read “Sei personaggi in cerca d’autore” and “Uno nessuno centomila” last semester and they were among my Pirandello favorites. So are you excited about going to see “Endgame” tomorrow? You’ll have to tell me how it was! Are you going to see it in Padova or somewhere else?

I think the name travelers would be great for us, we have all traveled quite a bit and seem to want to travel more in future. Please let me know if I need to change anything on wiki.

I want to apologize if I didn’t answer your fast food questions in a timely manner. Unfortunately, what you see in the movies is quite correct in representing the American tradition, or better obsession, about fast food. Last time I was in Italy I was reading a few things about the "Slow Food" campaign sponsored by some excellent restaurant. I smiled in thinking how the fast food definition could have been compared to the Italian slow food one. Fast food is inexpensive, for a lot of families it makes it easier to budget their expenses with regard to food. You may think, why not go grocery shopping and cook? The tradition of cooking meals at home is definitely not as "important" in the American culture as it is in Europe. It is very hard for some families to be home and fix lunch, dinner, etc. Distances from the work place are, on average, quite longer than the one in Europe and therefore lunch and dinner follow a complete different pattern. Obesity, I believe, is correlated to this lifestyle. Another point is the enormous number of different fast foods available. Hamburgers: Wendy's, Burger King, McDonald's. Mexican: Taco Bell, Burrito Express. Sandwiches: Subway. Chicken: Pollo Tropical. Fish: Boston Sea, Long John Silver.

About your question on Mid Term elections… They can be compared to your Italian "Elezioni del Parlamento". The House and the Senate are elected halfway through the period of the presidency and these elections often determine future presidential choices. This year the Republican Party lost a large number of seats to the Democratic Party. One problem, that I believe is also happening in Italy, is that a lot of eligible voters have developed a sense of disappointment and don’t go to cast their ballots. As far as one of the possible immediate results of the defeat of the Republican party has been the resignation of Donald Rumsfeld.

In your last message, you asked me if I knew what Via Anelli in Padova was and I don’t, could you tell me about it? I was also wondering if you could tell me a little more about Padova in general in your next message since it's a city I have never been to and have always wanted to know more about.

Oh and I saw that we more or less have the same availabilities on skype so as soon as I download skype we can actually talk!

First of all, I wanted to thank you for the comments you wrote about italian literature, I enjoyed reading your opinions!

I have to say I’m a little jealous that you’re in Guadeloupe! That is so exciting, you’ll have to tell me what you did and saw when you get a chance!

The weather in New Orleans is pretty nice year round, the highest temperature we reach is 33C and the lowest is 7C. Right now it’s about 12 degrees which is a cooler than I’m used to, having lived in Miami for a few years.

Over the weekend I usually go out with friends, try to go to the gym or walk in the park, and of course do homework. We have a really nice park right by campus- Audubon Park. I was reading your short presentation on the who’s part of the tulanepadova wiki and saw that you lived in Maine for a while. Where did you live? I went to camp in Maine for 3 years so I’ve seen quite a bit of that state. Where else have you been in the US?

Qui va tutto alla grande!L'isola è bellissima anche se non è ancora turisticamente avanzata!ci sono molti turisti di una certa età che vengono a giocare a golf ma non molti giovani. Comunque il mare è meraviglioso ed è questo che importa!

In Maine abitavo ad Hallowell, a 2 minuti da Augusta, la capitale. mentre ero li sono stata nel New Hampshire dove vivevano i miei "nonni", a Boston più di una volta,a New York,Washington, nel Maryland, a Providence e in Quebec. Sono stata fortunata parché i miei "genitori" là mi hanno portato spesso in giro e ho avuto anche l'occasione di fare qualche gita con la scuola e con gli amici. Mi è piaciuta molto Boston perché la trovo "a grandezza d'uomo", se capisci cosa intendo!e grande ma allo stesso tempo vivibile. E poi New York, la mia preferita!E' cosi emozionante e piena di vita, di luci, di rumori,...Non penso che riuscirei a viverci per sempre pero è proprio bella!Anche gli altri posti che ho visto mi sono piaciuti molto!Il maine è bello ma non c'era molto da fare! un paio di volte sono andata a portland e freeport a fare shopping ma erano un po' lontani! adesso mi piacerebbe riuscire a vedere il sud degli Stati Uniti come Florida, Lousiana o Texas. Credo che il bello degli Stati Uniti sia proprio che ogni stato ha le sue caratteristiche ed è diverso dagli altri!e forse ci sono stati un po' meno "famosi" che pero varrebbe la pena vedere come il Nebraska o il North Dakota!Tu hai viaggiato molto negli Stati Uniti?

Caspita come vi invidio... tu e Viola siete state in posti maravigliosi, per me sono ancora inesplorati, ma in futuro spero di poterli raggiungere!

E' stata una settimana intensa e quindi non sono riuscita a rispondere prima.. sorry!

Allora... lo spettacolo di Beckett è stato meraviglioso! sono stata a Milano, al teatro Grassi, uno dei tanti piccoli teatri che fanno riferimento al Piccolo. E' molto conosciuto quindi sicuramente lo avrai sentito nominare! Quest'anno è il centenario della nascita di Beckett e quindi hanno deciso di dedicargli un mese di spettacoli: è un autore molto particolare... più che raccontare delle storie con una loro trama, accosta delle scene nelle quali critica la società: è sarcastico, ironico, sottile... un genio! molto spesso i suoi personaggi sono menomati e le scenografie sono ridotte al minimo per rappresentare la desolazione dell'esisenza umana e la mutua convivenza alla quale siamo costretti. E' un po' negativo nella sua descrizione della società però credo che l'abbia azzeccata in pieno. I personaggi di Endgame sono Clov, Hamm, Negg e Nall. La narrazione dell'intero atto è affidata a Hamm, cieco e costretto su una sedia a rotelle; con lui interagisce Clov, il suo "servo" accolto nella casa come un figlio, anche lui con problemi motori; e poi ci sono i genitori di Hamm che si trovano all'interno di due grandi bidoni della spazzatura dai quali ogni tanto spuntano per parlare. Via Anelli è una via qui del centro di Padova che oggi viene considerata il ghetto di Padova perchè abitata da extracomunitari che spacciano, causano risse, alimentano il giro di prostituzione;questa situazione spaventa gli abitanti della città. Quest'estate poi nelle vicinanze è stato ritrovato il cadavere di un ragazzo tossicodipendente... la giunta comunale ha deciso così di intervenire costruendo un muro alto tre metri e lungo ottanta per isolare la via, circondandola (il ghetto è costituito da sei palazzoni nei quali queste persone abitano e che erano pensate originariamente come residenze per gli studetni universitari). Padova ormai è conosciuta in tutt'Italia per questa via e c'è il pericolo che possa costituire un precedente, che il muro possa diventare un modo per isolare ulteriormente gli immigrati. La questione è tutt'ora aperta! ci sono poi le pattuglie della polizia che sorvegliano la zona giorno e notte, e all'entrata dei cancelli vengono effettuati dei controlli.

 

Padova è una città molto bella secondo me. Ha degli angoli meravigliosi! Nel nostro corso abbiamo creato una "wikipage" su di essa. Oggi provo a chiedere a Sarah se puoi consultarla altrimenti ci penserò io. E' piena di storia, cultura, negozi molto carini e poi si trova in un punto strategico perchè riesci a raggiungere facilmente le altre grandi città del nord e anche i paesi esteri confinanti.

 

Sarà stranissimo sentirsi via Skype... Ho consultato gli orari e se per te ve bene potremmo sentirci lunedì prossimo tra le 4-4.30 pm dato che sarò ancora nel laboratorio linguistico (sono le 9-9.30 am da te). che dici??

Fast-foods: comparing Italy and the U.S.A.

 

Italy is known all over the world for its history, its marvelous cities and the food - from pizza to spaghetti, to macaroni…which have been exported abroad. When I was in London last year food was the first thing people mentioned when they realized I was Italian. The same happens in Austria and Germany. I think this is due to the fact that the so called dieta mediterranea – despite our country - has been advertised so much because of its positive effects on our health; as you eat fewer calories and a more varied overall diet, as doctors recommend. On the contrary, when you mention eating habits of Americans the first thing you think of is fast-food because you are surrounded by ads of McDonald’s, Burger King, Wendy’s and many others that have become so popular. Kids want to go there because they are big, there are playgrounds, they are allowed to eat hamburgers and French fries, which are usually forbidden at home, and what is more important they are always given toys of the latest cartoon characters. Something they really love - like my brother! When he can make a wish he often asks to go to McDonald’s so that he can eat a Happy Meal and order the menu from the car. This happens because the main marketing target are the children. When I was a child there were not so many fast foods all around and my parents never took me there because they were far away and they did not want me to eat those fatty meals. But when I moved here my classmates used to eat there once in a fortnight and sometimes I could go with them. I really enjoyed it until something happened. One day after a birthday party at McDonald’s I got sick and stopped to go there probably because in my mind I associated my illness to the place where I had been. Nowadays after reading Morgan Spurlock’s “Don’t eat this book” I am happy of what I did because the author’s experience struck me a lot. I could not believe what I was reading but everything was supported by detailed statistics and his doctor’s test results. He ate for thirty days nothing but meals from McDonald’s in order to show the devastating facts for all to see: obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, heart disease… At a certain point doctors told him to stop the “McDiet” as he was going to compromise his health seriously. So did he but it took him more than ten months to gain his weight back and to feel better.

 

 

Before 1970 a “fast-food joint” was a burger or hot dog stand out on the highway somewhere. Now we are surrounded by establishments everywhere we go – from small towns to cities, from shopping centers to airports, to railway stations. The main problem was to convince people to eat more and more; but it could not work by offering them two-for-one specials because they would not go around with two boxes of fries or popcorns. A man called Wallerstein solved the problem by making the boxes bigger and increasing the price just a little: the results were astounding and the sales grow incredibly. The Super-Size Nation was born.
